The Pantone Color of the Year Was Designed for metaverse

This year, artificial intelligence and the metaverse have had more of an impact on the creative industries than any other digital medium. Pantone has joined the trend by announcing Viva Magenta 18-1750 as the Color of the Year for 2023 at Design Miami. The color was largely inspired by artificial intelligence and the metaverse, which is the idea that new digital ways to solve creative problems keep popping up.

The luscious and seductive shade that comes from the red family shows up as a sign of the strength and control of digital technology. Its color hints at the happy and hopeful start of a new generation, one that will be known for chat-generated and text-to-image-powered decades like Midjourney and the ones to come.

Viva Magenta 18-1750 is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2023. It uses the metaverse to show how artificial intelligence and human creativity can work together. “The Magentaverse” has a nuanced crimson red tone that is a good mix of warm and cold. It is a hybrid color that may help people transition between the real and the virtual worlds and give them a sense of the multi-dimensional realm.

Pantone says that “The Magentaverse” color Viva Magenta is strong but not aggressive. It’s a carmine red that doesn’t try to take over, but instead acts like a fist in a velvet glove. The team says that PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta is a transformative red tone that gives off a sense of life and can inspire creativity to build a better future.

Leatrice Eiseman, who runs the Pantone Color Institute, says that in this age of technology, people want to get ideas from nature and what is real. She writes, “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta comes from the red family and was inspired by the red of cochineal, which is one of the strongest and brightest natural dyes and one of the most valuable dyes in the world.”

She also says that PANTONE 18-1750 is rooted in the primordial, bringing people back to the original matter and calling on the forces of nature that people tend to ignore. She says, “PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta lifts our spirits and helps us build inner strength.”

A reader of The New York Times shared her opinion that this color represents the metaverse, “The magentaverse! Let us pause for a moment to consider that word. I wonder what Mark Zuckerberg would say? I also wonder what you all would say. What does it mean that this is what could define 2023?”
