Roblox is looking into this possibility with its set of developer tools which let anyone make experiences and virtual goods in the virtual ecosystem for kids.
The company says it is testing two different kinds of generative AI: one that can make code from text inputs and another that can make virtual materials from a natural language prompt (the automobile texturing in the video below). Roblox Studio developers will be able to use both in the coming weeks.
” Some creators know how to code, but may have limited experience creating high-fidelity 3D models. Others may be more experienced with model design, but less experienced with code,” Roblox CTO Daniel Sturman wrote in a blog post. “In both cases, we see a future in which even a beginner (such as myself for example – I’m a terrible artist!) can get a running head start as they look to bring their imagination to life in a Roblox experience.”
The company recently made it clear that it wants to be the metaverse’s infrastructure, which includes both the tools used to make virtual worlds and the places where people go to hang out in them. Epic Games is one of Roblox’s competitors, but AI-based tools like this could make it an even better place for inexperienced game designers to make the popular virtual worlds that keep young Roblox users hooked.
