Local media said on Wednesday that Shinhan Bank, one of South Korea’s top four banks by net profit, has made a “metaverse” site to offer what it calls financial and non-financial services. It says it is the first bank in the country to do this.
Sources say that the “Shinamon” platform will have areas for business, health care, art, and sports. The bank said that it tried out the Shinamon service for five days in June of this year, and 85,000 people came to see it.
Shinhan Bank made the announcement after trying out a number of things related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies. It used the blockchain network Hedera Hashgraph to test real-time international remittances with the Standard Bank of South Africa in December of last year.
Shinhan Bank was also one of the first investors in Korea Digital Asset Custody, which is a group of companies in the crypto custody industry.
The bank is working with Korbit, one of the top five cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, to give customers the real-name deposit and withdrawal accounts that are required by local law for transactions to be clear.
