After nine years as CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki said on Thursday that she was leaving the company. Her CPO, Neal Mohan, who pushed for the integration of NFTs last year, will take over.
Susan Wojcicki Resigns as CEO of YouTube
Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube and one of the first people to work for Google, has said that she plans to leave the company after almost nine years as CEO and 25 years with Google.
Wojcicki was Google’s 16th employee. She said that leaving YouTube will let her “start a new chapter” where she can focus on her family, health, and personal projects that she’s passionate about. On Twitter, she wrote:
Who is Neal Mohan?
Neal Mohan is a Stanford graduate. In 2008, when Google bought DoubleClick, an integrated advertising platform, he joined the company. Mohan is currently the chief product officer (CPO) at YouTube. He used to be Wojcicki’s assistant.
Neal Mohan, who is YouTube’s chief product officer, pushed for non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to be added to the streaming network.
The new CEO of YouTube has been a big fan of Web 3, the future of the internet, for a long time. Mohan said at the start of the YouTube NFT that “Web3 gives creators new options.”
Like Web3 and the Metaverse, YouTube will become more like a real world.
The CEO of YouTube said, “the first area in which you can expect to see an impact is gaming, where we’ll work to bring more interactions to games and make them feel more alive.”
Mohan wants to make YouTube more like the metaverse by making it more immersive. In a 2022 interview, Mohan said, “The first area where you should expect to have an impact is gaming, where we’ll try to add more interactions and make games feel more alive.”
He was also interested in how YouTube could help make virtual worlds in the metaverse a reality, but he was quick to point out that progress was still in its “early days.” With him as CEO, it’s possible that YouTube will get more web3 features.
Mohan hasn’t said how his ideas would be put into action, but it will be interesting to see how YouTube takes advantage of web3 and the metaverse.
