The National Basketball Association (NBA) and Meta have made a new agreement that will last for several years. This will give fans a new virtual reality experience through Meta Horizon Worlds on Meta Quest, which is the official VR headset of the NBA and WNBA. This may be beneficial for both sports and metaverse news.
You can use Meta Horizon Worlds for free with your Meta Quest headset. The NBA put NBA Lane in Horizon Worlds last year. It had a free throw shootout, a low-gravity slam contest, and other things. This new team is part of the NBA Arena, which will show live NBA League Pass games in virtual reality all season long.
Jennifer Chun, the NBA’s Executive Vice President and Head of Content Partnerships, says, “Our extended partnership with Meta will provide more immersive and innovative ways to experience the NBA. Meta’s digital world opens up exciting possibilities for NBA fans to virtually attend our games and to interact with other fans around the world.”
The NBA and Meta will bring 52 live NBA League Pass games to Meta Horizon Worlds. This will include five live VR games that are immersive at 180 degrees and have a resolution of 2880. Fans can go to the NBA Arena in Meta Horizon Worlds to watch NBA content with their friends, play interactive minigames, and cheer for their favorite teams.
In the coming weeks, NBA League Pass subscribers will be able to use YBVR’s Xtadium app inside Meta Quest VR to access their subscriptions. Fans will then be able to watch live NBA League Pass games from a “virtual” courtside seat and have private watch parties with friends. You can also watch live WNBA, NBA G League, and NBA 2K League games with a Meta Quest headset.
In addition, licensed NBA merchandise will be sold in the Meta Avatars Store, and NBA League Pass will be available in Xtadium, a VR sports hub app that lets people watch games together in high definition.
Rob Shaw, Meta’s Director of Sports Media and League Partnerships, says, “Meta’s immersive VR technology is giving sports fans new ways to connect with and interact with their favorite NBA teams.” “The NBA is always pushing us to come up with new ideas and use cutting-edge technology to give fans new things to do, and this part of our partnership does just that.”
As part of the extension, the Meta Avatars Store will soon have NBA-licensed gear for sale. Fans will be able to buy clothes for their Meta Avatars that show support for NBA or WNBA teams and show them off on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and the Meta Quest.
Meta Quest technology will also be shown to NBA and WNBA fans at big events for both leagues. NBA.com has the full list of VR games.
