Last month, the metaverse team and 4.5% of Microsoft’s staff were let go. You may have read in the metaverse news that Bill Gates is not a fan of the concept of the metaverse.
The Information was the first to report that Microsoft had gotten rid of its metaverse team, which it had only started four months before.
The Industrial Metaverse Core Team was set up in October. Its job is to build industrial networks and help users with metaverse operations.
It worked with clients in many different fields, such as healthcare, retail, and financial services.
At a conference in September, Microsoft’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Judson Althoff, said that Coca-Cola, Unilever, and General Motors were among the company’s most well-known clients.
Four months later, about 100 workers on the team were let go because the company had cut 10,000 jobs in January.
Most of the metaverse crew were people who were part of Project Bonsai when Microsoft bought it in 2018.
Bonsai is a “low-code AI development platform” that gives operators tools that can help optimize processes. The Information says that the co-founders of Bonsai, Mark Hammond and Keen Browne, have also lost their jobs.
A representative from Microsoft told said, “While we don’t comment on specific staffing details, Microsoft remains committed to the industrial metaverse. We are applying our focus to the areas of the industrial metaverse that matter most to our customers and they will see no change in how they are supported.”
