La Liga announces its intention to incorporate Web3 technology into the league

The Spanish La Liga, one of the most-watched football leagues in Europe, has confirmed that it intends to utilize Web3 technology in the upcoming year. The Spanish top flight has revealed plans to utilize a Web3-based tracking system for goal-scoring balls. The technology, which will be made accessible by a third-party company called Gol-Ball, will verify these balls to ensure that fans can obtain them through formal marketplaces. The system is scheduled to go live following the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The technology will be utilized to recover balls used in each match and to identify exact balls used to score each goal, a previously nonexistent practice as the balls were not previously separated or treated in any special way.

Eto said: “Throughout my career as a footballer you would normally be given a ball only after scoring a hat-trick, but you were never sure it was the ball you actually scored any of the goals with. If we had been able to identify the goal-scoring ball, my colleagues and I would have wanted all of them.”

La Liga said in a press statement that all fans would be able to get their hands on these goal-scoring balls through “fan engagement mechanisms” that would be announced later on January 8. This means that there will be new markets for these balls. Fans could win them through sweepstakes or pay to play, giving the league new ways to get fans involved.
