CCP games joins other major game firms in exploring Web3

CCP Games is hopeful about blockchain technology, just like other big game companies like Ubisoft and Square Enix.

CCP Games, the developer behind the popular online game EVE Online, has recently announced its participation in the Web3 Gaming Alliance, a coalition of gaming companies, blockchain developers, and other organizations that are working to advance the adoption of Web3 technology in the gaming industry.

The company has also raised $40 million in funding to develop a new AAA title that will utilize blockchain technology and be set in the EVE universe.

The new game will feature on-chain systems with an emphasis on persistence, composability, and truly open third-party development to create a new relationship between virtual worlds and players. CCP’s move into Web3 gaming is not surprising, given CEO Hilmar Pétursson’s interest in how blockchain could change gaming ideas like user ownership and open economies.

Web3 technology, which is built on blockchain and decentralized infrastructure, has the potential to revolutionize the way games are developed, distributed, and played. It enables the creation of decentralized marketplaces, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and other features that can enhance gameplay and create new revenue streams for developers.

Other major game publishers like Ubisoft and Square Enix have also been exploring and investing in Web3 gaming. Ubisoft has been experimenting in the space for years, while Square Enix is actively developing NFT games, including the forthcoming Symbiogenesis on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon.

CCP’s announcement is a significant development for the Web3 gaming industry, as the company is behind one of the most dedicated and active gaming communities with EVE Online. The game has been running for over 18 years, with a loyal player base, making it an ideal platform to experiment with blockchain technology.

Overall, CCP’s move into Web3 gaming and the new funding raised for its upcoming blockchain-based game shows that the company is hopeful about the potential of blockchain technology in the gaming industry.

As more major game companies explore the space, it’s clear that Web3 gaming is becoming an increasingly important area to watch in the years to come.
